September has arrived and that means I am welcoming all of the wonderful, sentimental things I love about Fall. It’s excitement for cooler weather, chunky blankets, cozy fires, and the anticipation of the holidays yet to come. Here in the south the weather may not fully consist of changing leaves and a cool breeze just yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t decorate our homes in preparation! Some of my favorite, simple decor items you can add into your existing space are yummy fall candles, pumpkins and colorful mums on our porches, beautiful, seasonal table settings and extra chunky throws!

Candles

My first suggestion to creating an atmosphere of fall in your home may seem obvious but let’s face it, you have to have a really good fall candle or two (or five or ten). We have candles burning every evening in our home year-round, but my family gets most excited when it’s time to put out fall candles. Candles create an atmosphere and can evoke special memories and moments just like music. So, go purchase your favorite fall candles, light them up every evening, and enjoy.

Decorate Your Porches for Fall

A great way to anticipate the fall season is to decorate your porches. Mums, pumpkins, and a fall wreath or sign on your door are simple, inexpensive details that can transform the overall mood of your home’s exterior. Two things to consider when choosing your mums and wreath are color and scale. You want the colors of your home and the colors of your arrangements to compliment each other so that your arrangements stand out. I always suggest checking out a color wheel if you’re not sure which direction to take. When considering the scale, you may want to group several mums together at layered height for a greater impact, especially if you have a large front porch or really small mums. As far as pumpkins, you can’t go wrong with a classic orange but there are now so many ornamental and heirloom varieties that are readily available in white, green, grey, tomato red and more that are so cool and unique that you can absolutely make a statement with!

Tablescapes

If you have a dining room table that you don’t use everyday, it’s fun to create a seasonal tablescape. To keep it simple, you can add a fall table runner and/or placemats, and layer fall plates (often times I’ll use fall dessert plate on top of my plain, every day plate) to create your fall look. If you find that simple isn’t your style, add in more texture by layering with fall napkins, a baby pumpkin on each plate, and a nice fall centerpiece. I always love a unique centerpiece but if you’re not interested in the time or expense it can sometimes take to create or purchase one, a great option is a large, glass hurricane candle holder. You can transition this from season to season by changing up your fillers. For instance: candy corn or small pinecones are a great fall option, while red and green m&m’s or tiny, glass ornaments are great for Christmas. You can also easily go outside and source your decor from nature by incorporating dried greenery, pumpkins or gourds, wood, pinecones, and more into the design. Bottom line is, have fun with it....it’s your table!

Pillows and Throw Blankets

Nothing says fall like a cozy blanket, a good book and your favorite chair. I always like to add in some extra chunky blankets to our living spaces when the temps start to drop. Everything for me is about layers, so I like to throw one across a chair or sofa, or even bring in a large basket or ladder full of several blankets to add in extra texture and color to the space. I also like to incorporate a few extra throw pillows on the sofa. Thankfully, these days they make seasonal décor in many different colors ways so that we’re not stuck with the traditional orange, green and brown, of years past. Another great option is to simply use heavier textures and deeper shades of the existing colors in your room to add depth and a moodier vibe to the space.

It’s been a crazy ride this year. Many things that can weigh us down. Keep your chin up! Look for the positive, and create an atmosphere that brings comfort and excitement for new things to come!
